Increasing returns, monopolistic competition, and international trade: Revisiting gains from trade

چکیده
We study the canonical Krugman (1979) trade model with non-CES preferences that yield autarky at finite costs. prove a non-monotone impact of gradual liberalization. At first, near autarky, emerging reduces world welfare, while free it becomes large enough to be beneficial (Krugman's result). This non-monotonicity persists under heterogenous firms. The harmful small-scale is explained by variable markups and underpriced imports, which become socially excessive. Unlike protectionists, we argue “liberalization should go far”. On other hand, show anti-dumping measures can viewed as remedy for aforementioned imports distortion.

Revisiting the Revisited: An Alternative Test of the Monopolistic Competition Model of International Trade
This paper proposes an alternative test of the monopolistic competition model of international trade that has an implication for the relationship between the volume of trade and similarity among trading countries in the size of the economy. In the existing literature the model’s implication has been tested for aggregate trade, which includes the sectors that are not characterized by product dif...
متن کاملGains from trade and efficiency under monopolistic competition: a variable elasticity case
We present a general equilibrium model of monopolistic competition with variable demand elasticities and investigate the impact of free trade on welfare and efficiency. First, contrary to the constant elasticity case, in which all gains from trade are due to increasing product diversity, our model features gains from pro-competitive effects. Second, we show that the market outcome is not constr...
متن کاملInternational Trade with Increasing Returns in the Transportation Sector
In this general equilibrium framework, the transportation sector is modeled as a distinct sector with increasing returns. A more advanced technology has a higher fixed cost but a lower marginal cost of production. Even with both manufacturing firms and transportation firms engage in oligopolistic competition and choose technologies optimally, the model is tractable and results are derived analy...
متن کاملIncreasing Returns and All That: A View From Trade
Do scale economies contribute to our understanding of international trade? Do international trade flows encode information about the extent of scale economies? To answer these questions we examine the large class of general equilibrium theories that imply Helpman-Krugman variants of the Vanek factor content prediction. Using an ambitious database on output, trade flows, and factor endowments, w...
متن کاملHabit Persistence and Welfare Gains from International Asset Trade
We introduce habit formation in a model that studies the link between international trade in financial assets, economic growth, and welfare. As with time separable preferences asset trade increases the mean growth rate, but it also increases growth-volatility. We demonstrate that the welfare gain from asset trade is lower with habit persistence in consumption. This reflects that the habit-formi...
